WHO WE ARE
Kalapooya Fire is a small-batch, farm-focused CO2-extracted vape pen line. Our mission is to raise awareness to the original history and culture that inspired the Oregon Cannabis Industry’s focus on eco-stewardship, sustainability, and earth-kind farming & production. Our goal is to share each of our farm partner’s stories and to educate consumers by helping them connect in a more meaningful manner with the Source of their cannabis.
We aim to educate about the differences between cultivation methods and growing styles as well as the effects that geography and climate have on the expression we see from cannabis flowers and extracts that we consume. Through our products, we tell the story of each farm that we work with in their own words.
Kalapooya Fire draws its inspiration from the geography where we grow and process Cannabis and from the original history and culture of sustainability that goes back hundreds of years in this land. The Kalapuya People once stretched from Hood River to the Coast, all throughout the Willamette Valley, to the west of the Cascades, and down to the Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon. At one time, this Native tribe was one of America’s largest, with many small villages spread across the Valley. The Kalapuya were known as the original sustainable, eco-steward culture of the Americas, and as hunters, fisherman and managers of the land, they espoused many unique, sustainable practices.
The Kalapuya were the original Oregonians. They used fire as a tool to manage the ecology by lighting controlled burns throughout the grasslands of the Willamette Valley. These intentional fires helped manage invasive plant species, reduce pest insect populations that decimated village crops, and helped make the hunts easier by herding deer and elk populations. The primary use for these fires, was to help proliferate the Camus bulb which grows wild in this region. Burning the grasslands changed the soil chemistry such that this bulb would sprout and mature after the fires. Upon harvest, the Kalapuya People would process these bulbs into Camas cakes which they used extensively among their villages as a food subsistence item and a bartering currency.
In more modern times, Cannabis has come to be known by many names, one of which is “the Fire!” The modern Cannabis industry in Oregon is known for its focus on organic farming methods, sustainability, permaculture, and earth-conscious production standards and practices. We recognize that this culture would not have been possible if it were not for the rich history that the Kalapuya People brought to this geography, long before modern Cannabis farming. Kalapooya Fire seeks to honor and educate about the original history and culture that has inspired the modern Cannabis industry in this great land that we call home.
A portion of proceeds from each Kalapooya Fire cartridge goes to our annual Kalapuya Scholarship which supports Native American students who have an interest in the Cannabis industry and wish to study horticulture or chemistry at the University level in Oregon. Critical Source also encourages more tribal participation in the Oregon Cannabis industry by making our full proprietary SOP’s and process available free of charge to any Oregon Native American Tribe who wishes to invest in their own CO2 extracts operation in conjunction with their Cannabis farms.
